Chestnut Bisque (Creamy Chestnut Soup) – Easy Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 2 cups cooked chestnuts (roasted or vacuum-packed)

  • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 medium carrot, chopped

  • 1 celery stalk, chopped

  • 1 small bay leaf

  • 4 cups vegetable or chicken broth

  • ½ cup cream (or coconut milk for dairy-free)

  • ¼ tsp nutmeg

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • Optional: ¼ cup white wine, fresh thyme, croutons for topping


Instructions

1. Sauté the aromatics

  • Heat butter in a pot.

  • Add onion, carrot, celery and cook until soft (5–7 minutes).

  • Add garlic and sauté 1 minute more.

2. Add chestnuts

  • Add the cooked chestnuts and stir to coat with the aromatics.

3. Deglaze (optional)

  • Pour in the white wine and simmer for 2 minutes until slightly reduced.

4. Add broth

  • Add the broth, bay leaf, salt, pepper, and simmer for 20 minutes.

5. Blend

  • Remove bay leaf.

  • Use a blender (or stick blender) to puree until very smooth.

6. Add cream

  • Return to pot and stir in cream and nutmeg.

  • Warm gently (don’t boil).


Serve & Garnish

Top with:

  • Croutons

  • A swirl of cream

  • Fresh thyme

  • Cracked black pepper

  • Toasted chestnut pieces


Flavor Variations

Mushroom–Chestnut Bisque

Sauté 1 cup sliced mushrooms with the onions.

Vegan Version

Use olive oil and coconut cream.

Spiced Chestnut Bisque

Add a pinch of cinnamon or allspice.
