🥟 Classic Wonton Soup Recipe
🕒 Prep Time: 30 mins
👨🍳 Cook Time: 15 mins
🍽️ Serves: 4
🧾 Ingredients:
For the Wontons:
1/2 lb (225g) ground pork (or chicken/shrimp)
2 green onions, finely chopped
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp sesame oil
1/2 tsp grated ginger
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 tsp white pepper or black pepper
20–25 wonton wrappers
1 egg (for sealing)
For the Soup:
4 cups chicken broth (preferably low-sodium)
1 cup water
1 tbsp soy sauce
1/2 tsp sesame oil
1 clove garlic (crushed)
4–5 slices of ginger
Salt to taste
Optional: A pinch of white pepper or chili oil for heat
Optional Add-ins:
Baby bok choy or spinach
Sliced mushrooms (shiitake, button, or enoki)
Cooked noodles (for a heartier version)
Chopped green onions and cilantro for garnish
🥢 Instructions:
1. Prepare the Wontons:
In a bowl, mix pork (or shrimp), green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and pepper until well combined.
Place a wonton wrapper on a flat surface. Add ~1 tsp of filling in the center.
Moisten the edges with beaten egg, fold into a triangle, and press to seal.
Optionally, bring the two triangle ends together and seal to make a “nurse’s cap” shape.
📝 Tip: Keep wonton wrappers covered with a damp cloth to prevent drying out.
2. Make the Broth:
In a pot, bring chicken broth, water, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger to a gentle simmer.
Let simmer for 10–15 minutes to infuse flavor.
Add greens (bok choy, mushrooms) if using, and simmer for 2–3 more minutes.
3. Cook the Wontons:
Bring a separate pot of water to boil. Gently drop in wontons.
Boil for 4–5 minutes, or until they float and are fully cooked.
Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked wontons into the soup.
4. Assemble and Serve:
Ladle broth into bowls and add 4–6 wontons per serving.
Garnish with chopped green onions, cilantro, and a drizzle of chili oil or sesame oil.
🍽️ Serving Suggestions:
Serve with a side of stir-fried vegetables or egg rolls.
Add ramen or rice noodles to make it a full meal.
For extra crunch, serve with fried wonton strips on top.
🔁 Variations:
Vegetarian Wonton Soup: Fill wontons with finely chopped mushrooms, tofu, and cabbage.
Spicy Sichuan Style: Add chili garlic oil and black vinegar to the broth.
Frozen Wontons: You can freeze uncooked wontons and cook straight from frozen.
